Writer and Editor

Jared Silverstein (b. 1997) is a drummer and educator with a commitment to equity in education and the arts originally from New Jersey and now resides in Arizona. His formative musical experiences were at the Jazz House Kids and NJPAC Jazz for Teens music programs, and later went on to study at the Juilliard School as a B.A. in Jazz Percussion. Following Juilliard, Jared attended Rutgers University studying Physics and Mathematics where he received the Herman Y. Carr scholarship in Physics. He credits his friends, teachers, and mentors as being largely influential to his outlook on music and the world.

Jared has performed at the Berne Jazz Festival, Carnegie Hall with the New York Pops Orchestra, the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, and other notable venues. He values the importance of locally based community music organizations and groups in his life, having close ties with musical communities in the central New Jersey Princeton area as well as in Flagstaff and Sedona, Arizona.

Jared has worked as a music educator for over 7 years and has a love for creative-improvised, American Jazz, singer-songwriter, classical, contemporary cross-genre, and World music. Currently he works as a math teacher at Sedona High School and does social media and community management work for Miami based impact organization Social Impact Movement. His other passions and interests include mathematics, economics, impact art, documentary film, climate action, and the intersection of music, advocacy, and social justice.

When it comes to performance, his experiences with Kirtan and jazz have largely influenced his way of expressing himself at the drum set, and he plays to express both the intellectual and emotional sides of music.
